Nourish Your Gut to Reach Your Summer Goals

Oh, summer. The season of camping trips, backyard barbecues, family reunions, and days on the beach. For many of us, the rapid approach of the summer months comes with the desire to make sure our bodies are beach and adventure-ready. Whether that means you are looking to boost energy, improve your strength, or shed a few winter pounds, it’s likely that you are looking to kick things up a notch when it comes to your health and fitness routine.

But, where to start? Of course, exercise paired with a whole-food-based diet are essential. But, there’s one more factor that can have a significant impact on your progress, the gut.

What’s your gut have to do with it?

Many of us know and understand that the gut is responsible for digestion and elimination but its responsibilities stretch much further than that. Your gut contains bacteria that are largely responsible for important body functions and have the capability to affect the body’s nutrient absorption, hormone regulation, immune response, skin health, mental health, weight loss, and the body’s ability to get rid of toxins.

So, how do we know if the gut needs a little more TLC? Here are 4 signs to watch out for.

  1. Lack of Energy or Motivation
It’s normal to have the occasional day where you don’t feel up to working out. However, if you are finding that you struggle to find the motivation day in and day out, that could be a sign that something is off with your gut. After all, the gut and brain are connected via the gut-brain axis which means that the gut can impact your mood, motivation level, and even your self-discipline.
  2. Excessive Bloating
No one likes to feel bloated. And that feeling is even worse when you are trying to stick to a fitness routine. It can make working out uncomfortable and feel like more pain than it is worth. If you find that you are consistently bloated, then it may be time to take your gut into consideration. After all, bloating often occurs when our gut is having a difficult time digesting something, which can happen when our gut microbiome is out of balance.
  3. Lack of Progress
If you have spent the last few weeks or months working out consistently, but haven’t been seeing any progress in muscle gain or endurance, then your gut might be to blame. After all, the gut is responsible for absorbing nutrients and distributing them to other systems in the body. These systems require those nutrients as fuel in order to function optimally. If these nutrients aren’t being properly absorbed, then other systems won’t be getting the fuel they need and you won’t see the progress you were hoping for.
  4. Unintentional Weight Gain
As mentioned before, an unbalanced gut can knock other systems out of whack, which can lead to weight gain. In addition to that, your gut has a direct impact on your metabolism. Therefore, if your gut is unhealthy then your metabolism will likely slow down, causing you to put on a few pounds. So if the number on your scale seems to keep inching up no matter what you do, it may be time to focus on your gut health.

What to do if you notice one or several of these signs? A couple of daily shifts paired with consistency is the perfect starting point. Focus on drinking plenty of high-quality H2O, limit the junk food and focus on consuming a variety of whole foods, seed your gut with beneficial bacteria with the help of a daily probiotic, give your digestive system a boost with the help of enzymes, and nourish your body with the most powerful superfood (that we all know and love), organic Wild Microalgae®

Nourishing the gut, it’s at the core of living the #NewEarthLife. Cheers to a gut-healthy summer!
