Let’s Celebrate Blueberries

With July being peak harvest season for these bite-sized berries, it’s no wonder that it has been deemed National Blueberry Month! While this small fruit may not seem like more than a tasty snack or smoothie ingredient, it is far more than that! In fact, they are one of the greatest fruits and vegetables we can eat. Adding them to our diets is more than a good habit to consider, it can be an integral part of improving your health.

In celebration of National Blueberry Month, here are 10 facts you may not know about these nutrient-rich berries.

  1. A single blueberry bush can produce as many as 6,000 blueberries a year.
  2. People have been eating blueberries for more than 13,000 years!
  3. Modern blueberry farming and harvesting practices weren’t invented until the 20th century. Before that, if you wanted to enjoy blueberries you had to scavenge them yourself.
  4. Blueberry bushes come in a variety of sizes. Some are as small as 10 centimeters and others can grow up to 13 feet in height!
  5. Blueberries are one of the few fruits that are native to North America.
  6. 98% of blueberries in the United States are grown in only 10 states: California, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, and Washington.
  7. Blueberries are at peak flavor when they are ripe and at room temperature prior to eating.
  8. The darker the color, the richer the berries are in nutrients like antioxidants and vitamins.
  9. Anthocyanin, which is the pigment that gives blueberries their color, is a powerful antioxidant.
  10. Between anthocyanin and other antioxidants like Vitamin C, blueberries are known to offer more antioxidant health benefits than nearly every other common fruit or vegetable.
