Smoothie Boosters We Are Loving

There aren’t many meals that take minutes to make and are jam-packed with a variety of nutrients. When it comes to creating smoothies, you can use all of your favorite whole food ingredients while targeting the nutrients you need. Not to mention, they’re a fantastic treat, especially during these hot summer months.

So that leaves us with an important question, how can we maximize these highly nutritious treats while maintaining that delicious taste? Here are four smoothie boosters we are loving this summer!

Coconut Oil
We want to ensure our smoothies sustain us. One of the best ways to do that is by adding some fat. A scoop of coconut oil is loaded with medium-chain triglycerides (MTCs) that can help keep your energy up. The healthy fatty acids in coconut oil have many other potential benefits as well, including increasing good cholesterol, controlling blood sugar, and keeping skin and hair healthy and glowing.

What about the flavor? Coconut oil pairs well with your fruity, chocolaty, vanilla, peanut butter, and just about any smoothie you can think of.

Organic Wild Microalgae®
This ingredient is by far one of the most powerful superfoods available. And, the fact that it is wild-harvested in Southern Oregon is the icing on the cake. Also known as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), organic Wild Microalgae is a near-perfect food filled with all 20 standard amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, phenylethylamine (PEA), and antioxidant pigments phycocyanin and chlorophyll.

The amino acids provide vital energy and fuel, the essential fatty acids are crucial for healthy growth and repair of the skin, blood vessels, and nerve tissue, and the antioxidants quench free radicals thus helping protect your ever-important cells. It’s a superfood worth having in your diet every day.

No need to worry about taste, either. A little goes a long way and blends nicely with the remainder of the ingredients in your smoothie.

Organic Hemp Hearts
These powerhouses are packed with protein, healthy fats, and many vitamins and minerals your body needs. These hulled hemp seeds contain nine amino acids and on average provide as much protein as chia or flax seeds. They contain even more healthy fat than both chia and flax, and don’t contain any cholesterol due to the fact that they’re a plant! Hemp hearts and seeds are filled with magnesium, iron, and zinc, assisting with nerve and muscle function, heart health, and strengthening bones.

If you’re not a fan of hemp protein powder, fear not, these mighty hemp hearts bring a creamy texture with a nutty flavor to your smoothies. They are certainly worth a try.

Dark Greens
Including dark, leafy greens such as kale and spinach are one of the best ways to bump up the amount of vitamin K and vitamin C in your daily diet. These two nutrients are essential for bone strength and are packed with antioxidants. If you don’t find time for it in other meals or don’t enjoy them as much, mixing these greens into your smoothie is perfect!

Pro tip: Keep your smoothie frozen by freezing your greens so they blend perfectly with the other ingredients!
