Refreshing Summer Slushies

Summer isn’t over yet, and chances are this hot weather will be lingering around for a few more weeks. While most of us are ready for the crisp, cool fall days, you can still make the most of what’s left of this summer weather by beating the heat with an ice-cold slushie. The best part? It’s easy and much healthier to make them yourself!

The Basics of a Slushie

Next to pouring juice straight out of a bottle, slushies are probably one of the easiest summer drinks to make at home. All you need is some fruit, honey, water, and maybe a bit of ice. Simply blend it all together and you’re good to go.

The most difficult part of making your own slushies is knowing how much of each ingredient you need to use. While you can always play with portions to get the perfect consistency for yourself, a good place to start is here with 2 cups of frozen fruit, 1 tablespoon raw honey, and ½ cup water.

Just as you would with a smoothie, you can always add a bit more water as you get going to thin the mixture out and help everything blend a little better. If you’d rather have a slushie that is thicker, you can either add more frozen fruit or a handful of ice to the mix.

Of course, the fruit you use doesn’t have to be frozen either. If you’d rather use fresh fruit, that’s great! You’ll just want to add about 2 cups of ice to the mix to help take it from a juice to a slushie.

Switch It Up

Once you get the basics down, you can start experimenting with different fruits, new flavor combinations, and so much more. Here are just a few ways you can switch up the ingredients to make a different slushie every time.

  • Switch up your fruit combinations. Instead of sticking to one fruit, consider adding 2 or more fruits to the mix. For example, if you wanted to make a watermelon kiwi slushie, try adding 1 cup frozen watermelon and 1 cup frozen kiwi.
  • Switch up your sweetener. Swap the honey out for the same amount of pure maple syrup, try using less sweetener, or even try using no sweetener at all to see which way you like best.
  • Switch up your liquid. Water is a wonderful base liquid for slushies, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use something else. Try using almond milk or coconut milk to give your slushie a creamy twist. If you want to enhance the fruit flavor, you can also try using freshly squeezed fruit juice.
  • Switch up the nutrient profile. Of course, no healthy drink is complete without a nutrient boost from our favorite superfood—organic Wild Microalgae®. Adding this unique and powerful superfood to your slushies is as easy as adding a dose of Wild Algae Blend. You can also take it a step further and make it a gut-supporting slushie by adding a scoop of Essentials Blend instead.

Strawberry Kiwi Slushie

If you’re a person who would rather follow a recipe, here is a wonderful slushie recipe that we recommend trying.

  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 kiwi (peeled and quartered)
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup ice
  • ¾ teaspoon Wild Algae Blend

There is still plenty of time left this summer to enjoy an ice-cold slushie. So what are you waiting for, it’s time to bust out the blender and make your new favorite summer drink.
