October, it’s the month that kicks off the holiday season. In a few short weeks, the streets will be filled with trick-or-treaters dressed in their favorite costumes in search of their favorite treats. There’s something about this month, the cool weather, and the change of the season that seems to begin to magnify the sweet tooth
It’s times like these that we turn to our friend moderation accompanied by dark chocolate. That’s right, chocolate. It just has to fall within the right parameters:
High cacao content, at least 70%.
- None of that fake stuff. No preservatives, additives or added flavors.
- Low in sugar.
- Minimally processed.
Alright, now that the parameters are set, let’s discuss why we love chocolate.
Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids, naturally occurring antioxidants found in plants. Just like other types of antioxidants, flavonoids help wrangle up and quench free radicals. There are some flavonoids that are known to go above and beyond providing memory and mood support.
Cacao is loaded with these friendly flavonoids. In fact, it contains more than green tea!
It’s a little strange to be talking about nutrients and chocolate, but it’s actually rich in quite a few. A key ingredient in dark chocolate is the cocoa bean, the seed of the fruit (not a bean). After being dried and processed, these seeds help produce the dark chocolate we know and love. The end result, a lovely dark chocolate bar that is rich in iron, copper, magnesium and more.
Dark chocolate is rich in PEA, a hormone-like chemical composed of the essential amino acid phenylalanine. It promotes increased attention, focus, task-completion, and goal-directed behavior. PEA amplifies the release of the “feel-good” or “happy” hormones, called endorphins. It also increases levels of dopamine, a hormone associated with pleasure, and serotonin, a neurotransmitter thought to also contribute to feelings of well-being and happiness. Additionally, PEA can help decrease stress and bring about an enhanced sense of well-being, elevated mood, increased drive, and optimal cognitive performance.
